a trick to lower shipping costs
Amazon offers order fulfillment for small businesses - the big advantage is you get Amazon's rapid shipment plus their special bulk postage rates from deals negotiated with the carriers. In effect, the small model railroading business' order goes on the plane with all the other Amazon orders, getting fast, cheap shipment.
MRH is moving to Amazon fulfillment in 2017 for our physical products. To get this, we just ship some boxes of product to some Amazon warehouses and then tell them to ship when we get an order. Amazon charges a service fee, but that fee, plus the cost of shipping, is far less than we can ship it for by ourselves.
Here's one example. If we ship my new Trackwork book to the UK, the cheapest shipping we can get internationally is about $20 and it takes a couple weeks to get there. (If we add insurance, tracking, or rapid shipment, the costs skyrocket quickly to $50 or more, just for a product weighing about one pound [0.45KG]). To ship with Amazon Fulfillment costs $6 (plus an Amazon pulling and packing fee of about $1) and the order should arrive in less than a week.
The only problem with this approach is if the business has a huge inventory of products they sell, then shipping boxes of product to Amazon warehouses for order fulfillment will be a royal pain.
It works for MRH because we only have a couple dozen physical products we sell.
